The Rise of Sneaker Culture exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum will host over 150 pairs of sneakers from the mundane to the sublime comprise this show charting the history of athletic footwear from functional shoe to sought-after collectible. After a hit debut at the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto, the collection makes its debut in the US with added enrichment: multimedia installations, design drawings, and new sneaks from artists like Damien Hirst and Kehinde Wiley. Sneaker culture has exploded in just two decades, and this retrospective more than justifies why shoes can be art. The exhibit is on now until October 4th, Wed – Sun 11 AM – 6 PM and tickets are $16.00.
The Rise of Sneaker Culture is organized by the American Federation of Arts and the Bata Shoe Museum, Toronto. It is curated by Elizabeth Semmelhack, Senior Curator, Bata Shoe Museum.
The Brooklyn presentation is organized by Lisa Small, Curator of Exhibitions, Brooklyn Museum.
