Rush Arts Gallery 2013 Summer Artists in Residence Lauraberth Lima and Patrick Rowe will each be showcases an ongoing body of work at Rush Arts Gallery Oct. 24th – Nov. 2nd 2013. There will be an opening reception Thursday Oct. 24th 6-8pm in conjunction with Curate NYC 2013, and a closing Reception Saturday Nov. 2nd 3-5pm that will include a live participation element.
Lauraberth Lima born in the Cape Verde Island of Sao Vicente, and currently resides in Brooklyn. Her Country Leaver series reflects symbols, portraits, and textiles configured in meditative mandalas. Lima’s materials include photocopies, photographs, reflective papers, rhinestones, and fabric on plexiglas. By combining portraits, scenery, and symbols of her native Cape Verde with pops of color and shiny rhinestones representing her American life, she is creating unique surfaces of meditation. These new mandalas reflect her unique travels as an artists and a mix of visual nostalgia connecting her homeland, childhood and current life in Brooklyn. Lima received a BS is Sociology and African American Studies, and recently completed her MFA from the School of Visual Arts in photography, video and related media.
Patrick Rowe, is an artist, educator, and social practitioner based in Brooklyn, NY. Patrick’s work is pedagogically based and explores civic engagement and
communitarianism through the deployment of socially engaged mobile art
into public space, as well as through interactive sculpture, installation, and
printmaking. On view at Rush Arts Gallery are new works that are evidences of his public printmaking projects in conjunction with Immigrant Movement International in Corona, Queens. These objects, print carts, and shadow boxes are evidences or “field notes” of community print making projects. Rowe has a BFA from Carnegie Melon, resides in Cairo, Egypt for 2 years, and recently received his MFA from Pratt Institute. On Saturday Nov. 2nd Rowe will be engaging some of the Rush Education students and the public in part of his public printmaking projects.
