Atatiana Jefferson is another victim to senseless police violence.
Atatiana Jefferson was minding her own business playing video games with her 8 year old nephew. Her back door was allegedly left open. Her neighbor James Smith called the Fort Worth police number for non-emergencies about Jefferson’s home around 2 a.m. Saturday. “What I witnessed was three or four tactical officers come from around the corner seem like… And in less than a minute, I heard gunshots,” Smith recounted of the incident. Fort Worth police released body camera video showing an officer outside the house with a flashlight. “Put your hands up! Show me your hands!” the officer shouted on the bodycam video before you could hear a gunshot. He never identified himself as police on the video before firing a shot into a window where Jefferson’s nephew was steps away. Officer Aaron Dean murdered Atatiana Jefferson in cold blood.
It is now Monday evening. Officer Aaron Dean is now former Aaron Dean. He has resigned and has been booked in jail for murder, according to inmate records on the Tarrant County website.
This is all too familiar. Less than a month Amber Guyger was given a slap on the wrist for murdering Botham Jean in his own apartment. In Dallas, Texas. After her sentencing she was comforted by the judge and bailiff with hugs and even gifted a bible form the judge. Amber told the judge she’d return the bible in 10 years.
Where do we go from here? Does every black home owner get a license to bear arms and protect ourselves? We obviously cannot rely on the police to protect us if they’re going to kill us in our homes!
Jefferson was a 2014 graduate of Xavier University in New Orleans and earned a bachelor’s degree in biology.
