The Get Down is a new Netflix original series which takes place in my home town of the South Bronx. The series takes place in New York at the brink of bankruptcy and how it gave birth to hip-hop, punk and disco. From tenements in the bronx, the SoHo art scene, CBGB, Studio 54 to the just-built World Trade Center. The Get down Premieres August 12th on Netflix.
The series stars Justice Smith, Shameik Moore, Skylan Brooks, Jaden Smith and Tremaine Brown Jr. will play the shows lead male roles. Newcomer Herizen Guardiola will play the show’s female lead. The series was created by Baz Luhrmann, executive produced by Nas and Grandmaster Flash serves as associate producer.
The show’s soundtrack will be released on Baz Luhrmann’s label, House of Iona, and RCA Records. It will be released exclusively on Apple Music, and features contributions from the cast, NaS, Miguel, Christina Aguilera, Zayn, Michael Kiwanuka, Leon Bridges, Jaden Smith, Raury, Grandmaster Flash, Malay, Nile Rodgers, and more. Luhrmann and Nas executive produced the soundtrack.
